Unbelievable figures

More than a billion people know her back home and her albums have sold more than 200 million copies. She has performed thousands of times all over the country and all over the world. A hundred thousand people in the audience, or more than half a billion viewers on a television-show, are normal things for Wei Wei. Several hundreds songs – 20 years Wei Wei has several hundred songs on her repertoire and she recently celebrates 20 years on stage.

The Olympic Ambassador

For more than 15 years Wei Wei has been representing the Chinese Olympic Committee and the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics. She will continue to show up on the international and Chinese arenas as the countdown for Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics are getting more and more intense.

The girl from inner Mongolia

Wei Wei was born in Inner Mongolia. Already at the age of four she started to take an interest in dancing and performing. She often followed her older sister and brother to school, and one day she was practicing singing in one of the classrooms. A teacher passed by and heard her. He was surprised to find a little child instead of one of his students. He told her she was good and asked if she wanted to start practice with him...

Her breakthrough was in 1986 at the China Central Television (CCTV) Spring Festival Show. The year after China sent, for the first time ever, a representative to an international pop contest: The 24th Poland Sopot International Music Festival. She participated and won. In addition, she won the "Miss Photo Award" which brought her even more attention. At that time, TV was also a new phenomenon in China and Wei Wei became the superstar of Chinese pop more or less over night.
