Sergey Lazarev
Russia’s new sex symbol and one of the only few Eastern European artists to ever achieve success outside of his home country, Sergey started his international career as one half of Smash!!, Russia’s most successful boyband. Following in the footsteps of their labelmates Tatu, Smash have achieved immense success throughout Asia 2004 in nearly every country of the vast region - India to Philippines, Singapore to Korea.
To gain a massive and loyal following in cultures as diverse as these, appealing to audiences of all ages, there must be something about this young and talented artist that allows him to cross every boundary in sight.
Sergey started his career at a very early age in a children choir back home in Russia. From this point on, music has never stopped being the most important thing in his life. When he was 14 he was already receiving his first musical awards. Having won several children's song contests, he honed his singing skills and joined a band called "Neposedi"; this is the band in which Julia and Lena of Tatu met.
In 2000 Sergey entered Moscow's famous MKHAT theatre school and graduated in 2004 as a professional actor. Being a prominent student, Sergey paved his path through the ranks, and was elevated to playing lead roles in Pushkinski Theatre's "Romeo and Juliet" and "Karamazov Brothers". Not content with just the opportunity to perform in mainstream Theatre, he together with his childhood friend Vlad Topalov, created boy-duet Smash!! They were immediately singed by Universal Music Russia and became one of brightest Russian pop-wonders in 2002-2003, more than once being named Russia’s Group of the Year.
5 Number 1 hits, numerous awards and millions of copies were sold in Russia, CIS and South East Asia, as a result of a short lived duet's career – the boys split up in 2004 only one week after the release of their second album.
Sergey began to record his solo album in 2005 and his Russian label made contact with award winning British producer, Brain Rawling. This collaboration added another edge to Sergey’s music, resulting in the release of his debut solo album "Don't Be Fake" in Russia which instantly sold more than 300,000 copies and lead Sergey to getting MTV’s "Best Artist" Award for the year 2006. In May 2006 Sergey also received Russian National Music TV Channel's MUZ TV Award as "Best new act". An instantly-recognizable celebrity, Sergey has become a frequent guest of Russia’s highest-rated prime time television, the kind of fame that Sergey has reflected upon on his next album.
“TV Show”, his second solo album, has achieved a similar level of success in Russia, backed by instant TV and radio hits “TV or Radio” (directed by Andy Soup, famous for his work with Scissor Sisters), “Everytime”, “Girlfriend”, “Shattered Dreams” and the current hit “Almost Sorry”, and has already lead Sergey to start getting ready for the record’s international release.
Produced mostly by world-famous Brian Rawling (Cher’s “Believe”, Enrique Iglesias’s “Bailamos” etc) at Metrophonic Productions in London, the album features songwriting input from about a dozen songwriting teams from UK, US and Scandinavia including Rob Davies, responsible for Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head”. The only other artist on UK's 2Point9 Management - the managers of this year's sensation Jay Sean - Sergey has a relevant and dynamic team behind him for the international launch towards the end of 2008.
With the social climate in Russia rapidly changing, a noticeable opening is appearing in the music and arts world. Talent that was suppressed for many years is now enjoying global freedom. Today we can now enjoy some of the performers that have established themselves successfully in their homeland
